Industrial Redux in Corinth, Mississippi

Barry was asked to convert a vacant brick building downtown into an urban loft, a getaway for weekends and family retreats.

Corinth, Mississippi, is a small town in the rural South that time has passed by. While it escaped being burned by the North during the Civil War and its streets are still lined with gracious antebellum homes, the downtown has suffered the fate of many small towns across America. Many of its nineteenth-century brick storefronts lie vacant, and people now shop at the malls on the city’s outskirts. Barry’s client had been raised here and returned for frequent visits. Committed to revitalizing his hometown, he asked Barry to help start a trend and help him convert one of the vacant brick buildings downtown into an urban loft, a getaway for weekends and family retreats. Built in the 1860s, the space was admittedly in poor condition: boarded up, it hadn’t seen daylight for decades, the ceilings were collapsing and the plaster was crumbling off the walls. But the location overlooking Main Street was ideal, and once the arched double-hung windows were uncovered, light poured inside.
